Caterpillar marked its 100th anniversary by pledging to invest $100 million in workforce development. The construction, mining, and engine manufacturer "understands the urgency of preparing the next generation with the capabilities required for the jobs of tomorrow," notes Jaime Mineart, chief technology officer and pledge executive sponsor, in a press release.

"The future workforce will need skills for what comes next," says Caterpillar Chief HR Officer Christy Pambianchi. That concurs with data from the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 , which states that manufacturing companies are anticipating broad adoption of AI (81 percent) and robotics (69 percent). To prepare, employers expect to be able to upskill 29 percent of workers in their current role, while they foresee a need to reskill and redeploy 15 percent of workers in the next five years.

The pledged funding will not only support the development of new learning initiatives but also build on the company's existing workforce initiatives, such as ThinkBIG, a technician training program offered at colleges and technical institutes across the US. The two-year program supplements traditional classroom work with a paid internship at a sponsoring Caterpillar dealership, and graduates earn an accredited degree backed up with more than 2,000 hours of on-the-job experience.
