What to Expect from the APTD Exam

The APTD focuses on a subset of capabilities from the Talent Development Capability Model and how to use that knowledge in talent development. It covers all three domains:

  • Personal Capabilities - 20%

  • Professional Capabilities - 50%

  • Organizational Capabilities - 30%

What is the Cost?

  • Exam fee: $499 (members); $699 (non-members)

  • The exam fee covers a testing seat for the APTD exam, exam score report, and APTD certificate once certification is achieved.

  • Fees paid are not refundable. If a candidate is found to be ineligible during the candidate review process, than a refund of the exam fee minus a $250 will be provided. See the APTD Certification Handbook for details.

When and Where Can I Take the Exam?

  • When you apply, you will choose a 90-day exam window during which to test.

  • Each window includes a 30-day blackout period when testing is not offered. (See table below)

  • Exams may be taken in person, at Pearson VUE testing centers around the world or from your home or office location via remote proctoring.

How do I Register for the Exam?

Candidates must apply and be approved in order to take the exam.

  • To apply for the exam, go to the ATD certification portal. You will need to supply information to support your eligibility.

  • If you require special accommodations, review the APTD Candidate Handbook before applying.

  • Once approved, you will receive an authorization to test email letting you know you can schedule your exam.

How Do I Schedule My Exam Appointment?

  • Your application must be received, reviewed, and approved before scheduling the exam appointment. Once approved, follow the link to schedule, found in the "Authorization to Test" email from Pearson VUE or

  • Enter the Certification Portal and follow the Schedule Exam menu option to select remote or in person testing.

  • Select the date and time available within your testing window. Pearson VUE will immediately email the appointment confirmation.

APTD Exam Windows and Deadlines

prior to the start of an exam window.
