Michaela Rodriguez is a Senior Instructional Designer for Charter Communications who earned the ATD Master Instructional Designer® Program Certificate.

What motivated you to enroll in the ATD Master Instructional Designer® Program?

I was really looking for validation and a boost of confidence. I am the “accidental trainer” that led me to instructional design. I previously had no formal instructional design training, so I knew this course would give me that boost I needed.

In what ways has the ATD Master Instructional Designer® Program contributed to your career and /or personal growth?

It gave me validation in my career. It helped me solidify that I made a great choice to pursue instructional design.

Would you recommend this course to others? If so, who and why?

YES!!! I know I am not the only accidental trainer. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to elevate their understanding of adult learning and create memorable learning experiences. This course has connected the missing dots for me.

How do you plan to apply the knowledge and skills acquired from the ATD Master Instructional Designer® Program in your personal or professional life?

I plan to put into practice the skills I learned by adjusting my approach to needs assessments. I learned to not be so afraid to ask questions. This was the biggest takeaway for me and really what I needed.

How did you initially become involved in the talent development field?

I was the “accidental trainer,” and before I knew it, I was creating content but never knew it was called instructional design. I always thought that becoming a supervisor in my field was the way to go (which is not bad), but taking a route that involved understanding how adults learn and where I could help someone grow and connect the dots gave me the most satisfaction. My manager recommended I look at ATD and see the possibilities for my skill set. My company was very supportive of my professional growth, and convincing them was not a problem.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

“You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.” “The answer will always be a no when you don’t ask.”

What is your favorite hobby or pastime?

My favorite hobby/pastime is painting.
