In this Corporate Training talk radio interview, ATD facilitator Stacy Lindenberg discusses new employee onboarding. 

As principal of Talent Seed Consulting, Stacy leverages more than 15 years of experience to designing and managing leadership and succession planning and development programs. Lindenberg, who facilitates ATD’s Essentials of New Employee Onboarding, describes onboarding as the process of bringing someone new into an organization—showing them the ropes and setting them up for success. It’s also the process for bringing someone already in the organization into a new role.

What’s important, says Lindenberg, is that this process needs to start before the employee is already in the role. This can run the gamut from getting the necessary equipment in place, sending a personal welcome letter from future colleagues, to setting up the new employee with the learning portal—all this happens before Day 1 on the job.   

According to Lindenberg, starting onboarding early means that the first day on the job isn’t spent filling out paper work and shaking hands. Instead, new employees can get down to actual work, and managers and co-workers can work with them to get their time to proficiency as quickly as possible.
