Why did you pursue the CPTD?

In my pursuit of the Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD) certification from the Association for Talent Development (ATD), I sought to formalize and enhance my innate abilities in a structured manner. As a self-made professional, I’ve always believed in the power of continuous learning and development. In short, I really wanted to give my DIY professional skills a bit of official recognition.

Being a black woman in a field predominantly occupied by individuals who do not share my background, I recognized the importance of representation and diverse voices in shaping the narrative of talent development. Pursuing the CPTD certification wasn’t just about acquiring a credential; it was about becoming a recognized voice in a space where diversity is often lacking. I aimed to bridge the gap, not only showcasing my skills but also breaking barriers and inspiring others who, like me, aspire to make a significant impact in the industry.

This certification serves not only as a testament to my dedication to professional growth but also as a symbol of empowerment and inclusivity. It’s a stepping stone toward creating a more diverse representative landscape within the talent development community, where everyone, regardless of their background, feels seen, heard, and valued.

How have you benefited from the credential—professionally and/or personally?

Professionally, earning the CPTD credential has been a game-changer for me. It’s like opening doors that were previously just cracked. The certification has given me a deeper understanding of best practices in talent development, allowing me to approach my work with a more strategic mindset. I’ve gained insights into the latest trends, tools, and methodologies that have not only elevated the quality of my work but also positioned me as a more informed and valuable contributor in my professional circles. More than that, it’s given me the tools to find more information when I need it, which is likely what I value the most.

On a personal level, the journey to obtaining the CPTD has been incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about acquiring a certification; it’s about the learning process and personal growth that comes with it. I’ve honed my skills, learned to adapt to evolving industry standards, and gained confidence in my abilities. The sense of accomplishment that comes with earning this credential has spilled over into other aspects of my life, boosting my self-esteem and motivating me to continually strive for excellence. My family rallied around my prep for the exam, creating a space for me to study. My toddler even helped shuffle flashcards!
