Women bosses are viewed as less qualified and capable than their male counterparts, according to a study.
Leadership continues to be viewed as a culturally masculine position, scientists said.
Research shows that women suffer from two primary forms of prejudice in the workplace.
Firstly, they are seen as both less natural leaders and secondly, when they adopt male behaviour types often required by these roles, they are viewed as inappropriate or presumptuous.
Lead researcher Alice Eagly, of Northwestern University, said: 'Cultural stereotypes can make it seem that women do not have what it takes for important leadership roles, thereby adding to the barriers that women encounter in attaining roles that yield substantial power and authority.'
