Rebooting Corporate Social Responsibility

While corporate social responsibility has been en vogue for years, it seems to be enjoying renewed attention in recent months. CSR is latching on to our field's current culture obsession, evolving from a check—the—box practice to a foundational corporate value.

Take Hilti, for example. This multinational construction and energy product manufacturing company's statement of purpose is to "passionately create enthusiastic customers and build a better future." The talent development function, led by Eivind Slaaen, head of people and culture development—and this issue's Spotlight has created a global training program designed to instill Hilti's purpose in all employees. In 2017, employees spent 32,000 workshop days learning about and reflecting on the company's corporate values of teamwork, integrity, courage, and commitment. And Hilti employees practice what they preach by participating in many CSR projects, such as renovating buildings, growing gardens, and constructing parks.
