While corporate social responsibility has been en vogue for years, it seems to be enjoying renewed attention in recent months. CSR is latching on to our field's current culture obsession, evolving from a check—the—box practice to a foundational corporate value.
Take Hilti, for example. This multinational construction and energy product manufacturing company's statement of purpose is to "passionately create enthusiastic customers and build a better future." The talent development function, led by Eivind Slaaen, head of people and culture development—and this issue's Spotlight has created a global training program designed to instill Hilti's purpose in all employees. In 2017, employees spent 32,000 workshop days learning about and reflecting on the company's corporate values of teamwork, integrity, courage, and commitment. And Hilti employees practice what they preach by participating in many CSR projects, such as renovating buildings, growing gardens, and constructing parks.
We understand that CSR is top of mind for talent development executives like you, charged with developing strong people, high—performing organizations, and a thriving society. Thus, CSR is a focus of each issue of CTDO magazine with our column,Giving Back, which showcases creative ways companies are transforming their communities for the better. In this issue, read how cloud infrastructure and digital workspace technology company VMware's culture of service earned it the number 14 spot on the 2018 Best Workplaces for Giving Back by Great Place to Work and Fortune.
Also in this issue: We look at the pain point of compliance in Angst Index, explore how to make the most of executive coaching in Career Hacks, and question the efficacy of unconscious bias training in Debate. And in Confessions From the C—Suite, discover how ATD Vice President Tim Ito learned to take a long—term approach to strategy and learning during his tenure at AOL—Time Warner.
