The rise of remote work has led to another dramatic shift in the way business is conducted—remote interviews. This growing trend has created some unexpected challenges, so it’s important to note the potential pitfalls when trying to secure a remote position. First, communicate your calendar to family members, your partner, or roommates. If necessary, tape a sign to your door to let them know you’re in an interview. You don’t want any surprises or distractions. Next, make sure your backdrop is neutral. Find a space that’s well lit, clutter-free, and quiet. Avoid virtual backgrounds, if possible. These tend to flicker on and off and can cause your hands, or even your head, to disappear. It’s also a good idea to clear your screen of everything but the video window. This will prevent unwanted distractions and notifications from popping up. Finally, establish good eye contact. Position the video window so that you’re looking directly at your computer’s camera. This will make you appear attentive and engaged.
