Diversity and inclusion are more important than ever in today’s modern workplace. That said, many companies are simply “going through the motions” rather than tackling D&I head-on. How can you ensure that your efforts are meaningful rather than performative? First, consider how D&I concepts inform your day-to-day operations. If it’s not at the forefront, you might need to recalibrate. For example, have more cross-functional meetings, change the way meetings are held to hold space for voices that aren’t usually heard or considered, or develop moments for employees who traditionally don’t interact with one another to have increased exposure. You should also consider how D&I processes are applied. All too often policies are viewed as black and white—right and wrong—which instills a punitive, fear-based application. Approaching D&I from a place of empathy and understanding is always preferable.
