Employee burnout is a tremendous problem. Burnout negatively affects your team members’ physical and mental health, it can lead to increased absenteeism and drain productivity, and it can even increase your risk of experiencing a cyber attack. According to a new report, those who feel burned out at work are far more likely to skirt security protocols and best practices, with some respondents reporting they feel “completely checked out,” and “doing the bare minimum at work.” Forty-eight percent of survey respondents said they have downloaded software at work without IT’s permission, and 59 percent said they don’t follow proper security guidelines when setting up their passwords. “Pandemic-fueled burnout—and resultant workplace apathy and distraction—has emerged as the next significant security risk,” 1Password CEO Jeff Shiner said in a press release. “It’s particularly surprising to find that burned-out security leaders, charged with protecting businesses, are doing a far worse job of following security guidelines—and putting companies at risk. It’s now a business imperative for companies to engage the humans at the heart of security operations with tools, training, and ongoing support to create a culture of security and care that helps us all stay safe at work.”
