Employee Advocacy Can Help Solve Burnout

Published Mon Aug 01 2022

Employee burnout is one of the main causes of turnover, but fighting burnout isn’t as simple as easing workloads or hiring more people. Some business leaders are looking at wellness programs to help employees maintain their mental health, but these efforts are often misguided. From a recent McKinsey on the topic report: “When asked about aspects of their jobs that undermine their mental health and well being, employees frequently cite the feeling of always being on call, unfair treatment, unreasonable workload, low autonomy, and lack of social support. Those are not challenges likely to be reversed with wellness programs. In fact, decades of research suggest that interventions targeting only individuals are far less likely to have a sustainable impact on employee health than systemic solutions, including organizational-level interventions.” Actually addressing burnout takes effort, and that effort takes leadership. Consider rethinking the HR department as employee advocates who are responsible for protecting employees from stress and mental exhaustion.
