Establishing Better Performance Metrics

Measuring performance is a difficult prospect, and it has only been made more difficult during the global health crisis where once-centralized teams have dispersed to their home offices and kitchen tables. There are certain tenants of performance, however, that do not change regardless of where the employee is physically located. These three universal domains of productivity can be the starting point for any organization looking to better gauge employee performance: their work, their team, and their customers. By drilling down into these three domains, leaders will have a better idea of how their team members stack up. And if improvement is needed in any of these areas, leaders should first look to the team’s manager. Managers are responsible for 70 percent of their teams’ engagement and are the foundation for tracking productivity by establishing clear expectations and setting clear goals. Unfortunately, nearly half of US employees start their day without a clear understanding of what it is they are expected to achieve. If the goal is unclear, measuring performance is a waste of energy.
