We’ve heard of greenwashing—when a company overstates or puts a spin on their environmental and sustainable efforts to increase their attractiveness to consumers—but what about “flex-washing”? This occurs when a company overstates their flexibility and touts their acceptance of hybrid work in the interview process but quickly turns traditional once the employee is hired. Because we don’t have a clear understanding or standard of what flexible work means, is demanding employees come to the office on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday really hybrid when it’s mandated? Just because an employee can work remotely occasionally doesn’t mean they’re reaping the benefits of having a truly flexible schedule and culture. What does that look like, exactly? Autonomy. Truly flexible workplaces place a premium on trust and allow employees to determine how and where they will get their work done.
