As business leaders look to the future, many are grappling with some of the most fundamental questions about what work is and where it will be performed. One theme continually comes up in these discussions, though: flexibility. Many feel that “flexibility within a framework” is the future of work, meaning that hybrid work environments with expectations on when and where work will be performed tailored to individuals’ roles will emerge as the dominant working arrangement across the globe. An important part of developing these expectations, though, will emerge from listening to what employees want from their culture. This needs to be a discussion rather than a top-down decision. A part of this conversation also needs to focus on rebalancing productivity and well-being. If the pandemic revealed anything, it’s that burnout is a reality for many employees, and to create thriving workforces, that burnout needs to be reigned in.
