In an effort to build a global community of practice, several years ago ASTD created the ASTD Global Networks. These networks, which consist of members and volunteer leaders, work together in several countries across the globe to facilitate the convening of practitioners who advance work-related learning for individuals, organizations, and society.

Initiation and maintenance of the networks, which operate according to a charter agreement made between ASTD and each global network, relies on ASTD members who volunteer their time and effort and on U.S.-based staff. ASTD has chartered global networks in Bermuda, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Korea, Panama, Portugal, Venezuela, South Africa, and UK/London. And, several prospective global networks are in the development stages.

The scope of what these networks can accomplish is endless. For example, global networks in Germany and Panama have organized in-country conferences. And, this October, the ASTD Global Network Denmark will host the second ASTD European Conference: Lead, Learn, and Innovate.

Regional and worldwide practitioners attend these network conferences in order to share industry insights and practical advice they can take back to their organizations. These exciting venues provide a well-needed forum for learning and exchanging information across boundaries.

In addition to the regional conferences, many ASTD global networks bring expertise and an international perspective by forming delegations to attend the ASTD International Conference and Exposition each year. And these delegations are not just passive participants. In 2003, the ASTD Global Network Denmark organized a conference-within-a-conference on innovation. ASTD members in Latin America have designed and held several Latin American forums in Spanish and Portuguese, and Asia and Europe also have held forums.

In an effort to boost their presence and expertise, many global network members take advantage of the International Conference and Exposition by volunteering in the International Room and holding sessions on how to form a global network.

Take advantage of all ASTD has to offer and connect with an ASTD global network leader the next time you travel abroad. Or, start a global network of your own. Find out more information at www.astd.org.
