How Do Hybrid Models Work in Real Life

A lot of thought has been put into what the future of work will look like, and many experts agree that remote work is here to stay in some form or fashion. This means that the future office will be a hybrid work environment, with some employees working from home and others coming in. How will managers grapple with this, though? How rigid (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are in-office days) or how flexible (come and go as you please) should they be? In practice, the answer is twofold: it depends on the organization's culture, and it depends on the employees’ needs. For the most part, managers are going to be expected to rise to meet the occasion. Employees are increasingly demanding flexibility, so when that is met with rigidity, turnover will likely increase. However, that must be weighed against meeting organizational goals and remaining competitive. Trust is important here. Most employees want to do a good job, and they are the ones who know how they best accomplish their work. If they prefer to start their week off at home, let them. But also let them know that it’s important they show up in person for the midweek staff meeting.
