How to Handle Communication Anxiety

Published Mon Oct 31 2022

For many folks, communication is difficult. And as the world opens back up, and work returns to some sense of normalcy, in-person communication is going to become more important. If this prospect fills you with dread, here are some tips you can employ to make things easier. First, practice. If you’re required to speak during a presentation, make notes and say everything out loud at least once. Visualization can also help with more informal interactions. If you know you need to introduce yourself to new team members, prepare some talking points. Understand that the anxiety you feel is all a mind game. Instead of focusing on feeling nervous, reframe it as excitement. The body goes through the same neurological processes for both, so it’s the interpretation of how you feel that separates anxiety from anticipation. Focus on succeeding rather than on what could go wrong and remember to slow down and breathe.
