How to Handle Layoff Anxiety

We are living through one of the greatest labor disruptions of the modern era. The Great Resignation, inflation, recession, and more have employees apprehensive about their job security. And for good reason. More than half of US companies are actively reducing head count or plan to in the coming months. More than 39,000 workers in the US technology sector alone were let go in August, including from big names like Peloton, Shopify, and Netflix. This uncertainty has resulted in nearly 80 percent of American workers reporting some sort of anxiety about their long-term job security. If you find yourself in this camp, there are steps you can take to assuage your fears. Start by separating the fact from the fiction. The stories you tell yourself might not always reflect objective reality, so monitor what you’re telling yourself about your career. Then, take constructive action. Allow your fears to play out to their conclusion. What would happen if you were laid off? What would your next steps be? Lay out a detailed plan and anticipate how you’d deal with each challenge as it comes. By removing the unknown elements, you’ll find your anxiety quieted.
