As the Great Recession continues to upend the workforce, many are finding new positions or even changing careers entirely. If you find yourself in that boat, brush up on your interviewing skills. First, have a story. Don’t just say “I like hiking;” tell the interviewer about that time you got lost in the woods. The goal is to be memorable and personable. Second, make sure you’re not just rattling off a litany of competencies. Make sure you talk about things you don’t know—skills you’d like to get better at. Overemphasizing what you’re best at can look to a hiring manager like you only want to stay in your lane and never challenge yourself. In the same vein, don’t be afraid to talk about ideas that haven’t worked. Demonstrate how you’ve grown and how you’re better approaching things this time around. Avoid using “I” too much, and demonstrate that you know how to be a team player. Finally, go further than the job description. Show that you have a vision for your future and the part this new role plays.
