There’s much debate about the severity and legitimacy of the so-called Great Resignation, but one thing is for certain: the way we view work has changed. Employee values, motivations, and perceptions have shifted dramatically during the past two years, and smart employers understand that resistance to this change will not result in positive outcomes. Unless they are proactive, burnout will increase along with resignations and employee churn. So, what can employers do to stay ahead of the curve? Simply put—focus on employee experience. To do this, start by improving the mechanisms for employee feedback and clarifying your employee listening strategy. It’s important to not only document key indicators like engagement, well-being, and belonging but to also make listening sessions more granular. Understand the sentiment around new changes and actively solicit feedback from employees. It’s also becoming important to build up empathy within the organization. Emotional intelligence (EQ) is crucial during periods of change, and the understanding and flexibility that result from boosting EQ have demonstrable impacts on positive employee outcomes.
