If you’re looking to reduce turnover this year, communication is key. This doesn't, however, mean scheduling more one-on-ones or brushing up on your public speaking skills. If you want to communicate better, start with listening. “The most important way to keep employees engaged is to simply listen to what they want,” said Dean Thompson, chief growth officer at HungerRush. “Their answers may not be what you expected to hear, and that feedback will entirely affect how you approach benefits and employee management.” And speaking of feedback, make sure there are multiple avenues available for employees to communicate their thoughts, feelings, concerns, and frustrations. Pulse surveys are a great way to accomplish this. “Sending quick and convenient surveys monthly or biweekly allows managers to monitor satisfaction and capture feedback so they can address problems before they fester,” said Mark Woodka, CEO of OnShift. But simply gathering the information does nothing if it’s not acted on. Use technology and data analytics to better understand what your employees are telling you; otherwise, your communication efforts can backfire. If employees feel like they are shouting into a void, it can quickly increase dissatisfaction and turnover. Make sure you’re ready to act on the answers to your questions.
