It’s a brave new world, and leaders need to adapt. Businesses that continue with legacy ways of thinking and outdated management styles will quickly reap the consequences in this environment of quick turnover and employee empowerment. One of the biggest trends emerging in leadership right now is the prioritization of creating a culture of wellness. Employees are people, not robots, and they need to be treated as such. And this isn’t simply a touchy-feely notion; the Centers for Disease Control estimates that depression is the cause of 200 million lost workdays every year, and costs employers between $17 and $44 billion annually. Understanding that mental health is just as important as physical health is critical and will grow in importance in the years to come. Leaders need to set an example—modeling for their team members healthy boundaries between their personal and professional lives—and help employees do the same. Build an environment that supports the whole employee, not just the part that comes to work every day. Training on empathy and creating safe environments can help, as can making mental health resources available to employees that are struggling.
