Making Sure Mentoring Doesn’t Burn You Out

Mentoring can have tremendous positive impacts on the mentor, the mentee, and the organization as a whole, but it’s a high-stakes game. Mentors spend their time, attention, and resources to help develop their proteges, usually above and beyond their actual job requirements. If you’re a mentor, though, you need to be careful. Although this relationship was likely entered into voluntarily and with good intentions, it has the potential to deplete you and make you less effective in the relationship and less effective at your job. This can be caused by many factors—taking on too many mentees, mentoring a high-maintenance individual, or not setting boundaries around your schedule. Understand the signs of burnout and the risk factors involved, and enlist a trusted peer to let you know if you’re showing symptoms. Seek to find ways in your relationship to maximize your impact while conserving time, and try to find ways to make the mentor and mentee relationship energizing for you. It can also help to speak about burnout openly with your mentee. Not only will this help you stay on the same page, but it will model the type of self-care and self-awareness that you want to instill in them.
