Nearly All Knowledge Workers Want Flexibility in Their Schedules

The workers have spoken. The future of work will be hybrid. However, hybrid work isn’t just about where you work; it’s also about when. In a recent study of more than 10,000 knowledge workers from numerous industries across the globe, 68 percent of respondents said they preferred hybrid work arrangements. Of those, 78 percent said they wanted flexibility in the location of their work, nearly all of them—95 percent—said they want flexibility in their schedules. Managers and business leaders should pay attention to this growing trend. Of those dissatisfied with the amount of flexibility their employer provides, 72 percent said they’d be looking for a new job within the year. “People don’t want a full, nine-to-five day of meetings,” said Brian Elliott, executive leader of the Future Forum. “They want the flexibility to turn off notifications when it’s right for them. Maybe for caregivers, it’s the flexibility to log off from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and then come back and do some heads-down work after the kids are in bed.”
