Artificial intelligence is going to have a massive impact on the way we work, and employers need to focus on reskilling as a strategic imperative. Automation will inevitably lead to job losses unless those jobs are redirected and employees are given the opportunity to up- and reskill. To do this, start by aligning skills development to business strategy. Develop a flexible reskilling strategy that supports the company’s growth and innovation goals. Next, identify skill gaps. Assess the current workforce’s skills and pinpoint areas at risk due to automation. Managers should be accountable for their employees’ learning plans, as employees prioritize “skills acquisition” over career progression. Provide access to diverse learning resources, encourage employees to pursue certifications and degrees, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and encourage employees to broaden their skill sets. Differentiate between learning and development, emphasizing the importance of individualized development through mentorship and coaching. Allocate budgets specifically for learning and development, offer financial incentives for skill development, regularly assess the progress of reskilling efforts, and adapt programs based on employee feedback. Throughout this process, motivate employees through promotions or salary increases to acquire new skills and celebrate their contributions to the organization’s growth.
