The Characteristics of an Agile Company

Gallup conducted a pioneering study on agility, surveying 5,500 US and 4,000 European workers in 2018. The research identified eight key drivers of agility, known as the Agile8, which include cooperation, speed of decision making, trial tolerance, empowerment, technology adoption, simplicity, knowledge sharing, and innovation focus. The study found that employees perceiving their companies as agile were more likely to believe in their organization’s competitiveness, financial stability, and overall success. However, German data from 2019 indicated that only 9 percent of workers strongly agreed that their companies possessed the necessary mindset, tools, and processes for agility. However, this percentage increased to 16 percent in 2022, reflecting a positive shift in agility, potentially influenced by the pandemic. Gallup suggests that leaders should explore the cultural conditions that contributed to increased agility and possibly attributed to the pandemic’s “rally effect.” The study encourages leaders to examine actions that promote cooperation, decision-making speed, trial tolerance, empowerment, technology adoption, simplicity, knowledge sharing, and innovation focus. Despite ongoing global changes and challenges, Gallup emphasizes the importance of continuous adaptation and improvement in organizations’ agility. While overall agility improvements may be gradual, focusing on specific factors within the Agile8 can enhance the employee experience and contribute to organizational success.
