We tend to think of burnout as a monolithic phenomenon, but there are several different types of burnout employees experience. Understanding these nuances will help leaders better address root causes and, hopefully, prevent their workers from becoming burned out in the first place. One type of burnout is overload. This occurs when employees work beyond their bandwidth to achieve success, to the detriment of their physical, social, and emotional well-being. To resolve this, help employees set and stick to boundaries, and reframe rest as ultimately necessary for productivity. On the other side of the coin, burnout can occur when employees aren’t challenged enough. Lack of stimulation and professional boredom can snowball into feelings of frustration and lethargy. Offer these employees the opportunities to learn new skills or explore areas of the business they’re interested in learning. Finally, neglect burnout occurs when employees aren’t given clear expectations, support, or structure in their professional lives. This results in learned helplessness where the employee feels like they can’t make any difference in their organization or their circumstances. Seek to empower these employees to provide them a sense of agency. Ask what tools they need and what support they require to feel successful in their roles.
