A recent study highlights significant challenges in the cybersecurity landscape. More than half of cybersecurity professionals report an increase in cyberattacks compared to the previous year. However, the study also reveals that organizations are not adequately assessing their cyber risk, with less than 10% conducting monthly assessments and 40% only doing so annually. A major contributor to this gap is the shortage of cybersecurity personnel, with nearly two-thirds of respondents indicating that their cybersecurity teams are understaffed. Interestingly, 39% of organizations seeking to fill cybersecurity positions are looking for entry-level candidates who do not necessarily need to have prior experience or a university degree, despite 44% traditionally requiring a degree for such roles. Chris Dimitriadis, global chief strategy officer at ISACA, emphasized the need for businesses to address these challenges, highlighting the interconnected nature of businesses, supply chains, and public sector bodies, noting that a cyberattack on one entity can affect others within the ecosystem. To bridge the cyber skills gap and enhance resilience, some organizations are upskilling nonsecurity staff, employing external consultants, and implementing reskilling programs. The study underscores the importance of hands-on experience, credentials, and cybersecurity training courses in evaluating the qualifications of cybersecurity candidates.
