It’s difficult to overstate the importance of employee recognition in the workplace. Positive reinforcement encourages great work and has other positive impacts that touch nearly all aspects of your culture. When recognition is done correctly, employees are five times more likely to feel connected to their company culture and four times as likely to feel fully engaged at work. However, recognition won’t look the same across industries. For example, employees who work in retail positions in the US are some of the least fulfilled. Only 43 percent of retail workers identified themselves as thriving compared with 58 percent of government workers and 66 percent of employees in the professional, technical, and scientific sectors. There is clearly an opportunity for increasing recognition of life events and accomplishments like professional or personal milestones. This will foster loyalty and a sense of well-being in the workplace.
