When it comes to sales, the portfolio of skills necessary to succeed is changing. A study of more than 20,000 sales job postings from 2019 to 2022 revealed a shifting landscape of skill requirements—one that’s more focused on the future and digital competencies. Anticipating the customer’s tomorrow is a major requirement. The ability to demonstrate knowledge of market data and use that knowledge to respond to developments in their customer’s business has been prioritized in the search for competent sales staff. The ability to collaborate is also increasingly important, as is the leverage of digital tools. This means an increased focus on data analytics to understand trends and the capacity for adaptation. Overall, the picture is clear. Sales organizations are looking for experience and future-oriented competencies. Anticipating needs is crucial, and the ability to adapt to those needs quickly is just as important.
