Onboarding is a critical element of any talent-retention program. Each interaction with a new hire shapes the way they view the company and informs their decision on whether the organization is the place they will ultimately remain. Ideally, the honeymoon period of onboarding extends consistently throughout the employee’s tenure, but more often than not the warmth fades, communication breaks down, and the goodwill fostered during their first few weeks sours. How can employers better onboard new employees for them to stay long term? Follow the three Es—experience, engagement, and enablement. Experience should be considered first and foremost. How did the new employee hear about your company? How did they come to their position? How is that position going to fulfill them? These questions will ultimately lead to engagement. A sense of engagement will be reinforced by the thoughtful care taken to the new employee’s experience. Finally, once experience and engagement are addressed, enablement can follow—or giving the new hire the tools they need to be successful in their role.
