The last time you were driving on a congested freeway, did you take notice of the cars that were obeying traffic laws and driving carefully? Most likely not, but you most certainly noticed the one car driving faster than everyone else while cutting across three lanes of traffic. The human brain is wired to notice the possibility of any threats to our safety. It wants to keep us alive. Unfortunately, it predisposes us to constantly scan the horizon for flaws, weaknesses, or things that aren’t quite right. So although this wiring in our brains keeps us safe, it can also make us focus too much on deficits in our behaviors or the behaviors of others.
