By the end of 2020, about a third of US employers said the skills gap had increased over the year before it, so much so that 80 percent said they were having difficulty finding candidates to fill open positions. The need for scalable digital skills is becoming dire—impacting operations and growth. Hiring isn’t always a viable option, so more employers are turning to upskilling their current workforces, and the shift to hybrid workforces might make this practice even more pervasive. The skills gap, a competitive labor market, and evolving work arrangements are creating a perfect storm. Start by bringing employees to the table and determine what skills they currently possess, what skills they’d like to have, and how they’d like to acquire them. Focus on digital formats and on-demand learning over traditional, in-classroom sessions, and prioritize experience over instruction. As employees gain new skills, not only will they be able to better perform their jobs in rapidly changing industries, they’ll also be more invested in the organization.
