From tempestuous tweets to bullying blogs and explosive email, online communication is awash in incivility. In the workplace, employers cannot allow offensive language and impolite behavior to go unchecked. Particularly when it comes to email, the primary form of business communication, employers must insist that users compose themselves before composing messages. Thoughtlessly worded email containing hostile, rude, insensitive, or obscene language simply has no place in a business environment (or personal setting, for that matter). Fail to address email incivility today, and tomorrow you may face hostile work environment claims, stressed employees, and insulted customers.
