Let’s be frank—employee engagement is abysmal. According to Gallup research, over 85 percent of employees worldwide are either unengaged or actively disengaged at work. Although employers are aware of this problem and many are working to try and fix it, it’s clear that most of these efforts aren’t moving the needle. While it’s true that not every employee is right for every position and some could be top performers if only the stars were perfectly aligned, leaders can help get their team members’ heads in the game by investing in them. While it might sound like an unappealing prospect to spend time and resources on employees who aren’t reciprocating, investment is one of the primary movers in getting disengaged employees back to a place where they’re productive and fulfilled. Start by creating employee development plans that are individualized to your team members’ professional goals. Offer to cross-train them, and encourage flexibility to ensure they have the autonomy to work how and when they want. This will help all employees do the best job they can in their given roles.
