Why Return-to-Office Plans Fail

In the past few months, several companies have been re-evaluating their return to office policies. Apple, for instance, has gone back on its three-day-a-week return, citing rising COVID-19 numbers. However, the simple fact is that the vast majority of employees don't want to work in offices full time anymore, and companies have to listen. “A lot of companies that had been in the news standing firm on their return policies did back up,” said Elise Freedman, a workforce-transformation-practice leader at Korn Ferry. “It’s a very interesting situation. There are no one-size-fits-all answers, no silver bullet. No matter what you do, it will not work for all employees.” So why is the return to offices so unappealing for many? The question of “why” is never discussed. It’s an unappealing prospect to be told where to work when it’s clearly demonstrated that the work can be accomplished just as well—if not better—from home.
