There aren’t silver-bullet solutions to turnover; however, one tactic some organizations are using in the face of the Great Resignation is the stay conversation. Simply put, this is a sort of interview you have with employees where you suss out how happy they are in their current role and what could be going better. This is an attempt to answer why people are leaving, but if you’re asking that question, you might already be falling behind. While the core concepts of a stay conversation are sound, these conversations need to start before attrition is noticed. The questions asked should be baked into everyday conversations with employees. These questions should get to the heart of how supported the employee feels, how excited they are in their role, what the company is doing right, and where they might be missing the mark. “As a manager, it’s important to think of ourselves as catalysts of great performance and ask ourselves, ‘What can we do to be in service of bringing out the best in others?’” said Tania Luna, co-founder of LifeLabs Learning, a management training company.
