If you're still using traditional classroom training, you're likely wasting time and resources. Such training fails to command the attention of employees who don’t see how the information presented will impact their day-to-day responsibilities. Most of the time, employees don’t retain the lessons. At best, it's an afternoon of missed productivity, and at worst, your employees will grow to resent training and view it negatively. In contrast, on-demand, individualized learning helps employees see the immediate benefit of the training materials, and you can expect to see higher levels of training engagement and information retention. To develop personalized employee training experiences, start by aligning learning and business goals. For example, what competencies will your employees need for your organization to succeed? Then create a skills inventory. Learn who has what skills and their mastery levels. This will help you understand employee gaps, and you can seek out training materials to address them or develop them in-house for maximum effect. Although personalized training is resource-heavy on the front end, the return on investment is extremely high when done correctly.
