To achieve the best results, answer these questions when delegating work.
Mon Jul 01 2024
Self-organized workers finish tasks quickly because they don't have to wait for explicit instructions. Such employees make it easier for managers to delegate tasks. To achieve the best results, answer these questions when delegating work.
1. What will I see when employees complete the work?
Communicate the results you expect, not the actions nor just the purpose. That way, employees can determine what they can contribute and don't waste time discussing the deliverable.
2. What do I want my staff to learn in the long run?
Many managers make the mistake of delegating small tasks. That gives them more control, but it robs their direct reports of learning opportunities. Your request can help your employees become experts. Don't fall into the micromanagement trap.
3. What is a "just enough" result for me to assess?
Delegate work that an employee can complete and receive feedback on within a few days or weeks. Individuals learn only when they receive feedback quickly and can relate it to what they have done.
