Breaking Through Bias: Communication Techniques for Women to Succeed at Work (2nd Edition) Andrea S. Kramer and Alton B. Harris Nicholas Brealey, 352 pp., $24.95
In this second edition, an update to the initial release in 2016, noted communication and gender bias gurus Kramer and Harris weave in lessons from current events. The book's 10 chapters are segmented into four sections that take readers on a journey from understanding gender stereotypes to communicating in difficult situations. The authors draw on their experience and research to explain "attuned gender communication" and discuss how women can employ it to sidestep the consequences of stereotypical treatment in the workplace and beyond.
What Is Strategy? An Illustrated Guide to Michael Porter Joan Magretta Harvard Business Review Press, 80 pp., $25
This book is proof that every book with valuable information doesn't have to be text heavy or voluminous in nature. Its bright and colorful illustrations don't detract from the quality of information Magretta presents. The cartoon character cast presents readers with a crash course in Harvard Business School Professor Michael Porter's classic frameworks and with a dose of levity. Given the subject matter, this is a fun read that offers readers a lighter take on management concepts and equips them with the knowledge to play an active role in strategic discussions and decisions.
