The article discusses the implications of clients as a more demanding consumers of consulting services on the consultant career model in the U.S. According to a survey by the Association of Management Consulting Firms (AMCF), consultancies representing various sizes and industries identified that the more demanding client base, the changing nature of the buyer and the demand for more experienced consultants are the three major changes in the field within the last five years. This poses a real training and development challenge to the consultancies wherein the traditional pyramid model, in which consultants gradually gain more experience by moving up in their organizations, does not work anymore.
