The article presents information on steps taken to transform Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s training department to a talent planning and development organization, called Wal-Mart University. Moving away from the instructor-led and computer-based training, the training department designed an interactive business simulation that teaches market managers how to develop the stores within their markets, analyze markets, and focus on process improvement. Supervisors received training on the new sale accounting procedures as well as how to facilitate that learning throughout the organization in order to boost team effort. The Wal- Mart University team also facilitated the adoption of new operating procedures that incorporate industry best practices.
