This article reports that more than half of college and university students in the U.S. think that it is acceptable behavior in the workplace to swap or download digital copyrighted files without paying for them, according to a recent survey released by the Business Software Alliance. The survey reveals that 52 percent of the student respondents and 25 percent of academics believe that, even in the workplace, it is correct to download and swap files, no matter the software value. Jenny Blank, director of enforcement for the Business Software Alliance (BSA), says that one of the reasons that BSA has become very active in getting the message out to students while they are still in school is to educate students early while they are still forming their opinions and behaviors. She says that an employer who hires an employee who has recently been on campus and downloading software, music, or movies with impunity needs to be aware of the climate that new hire is coming from. On its web site, BSA has a series of tools for employers to use to explain the legalities and liabilities regarding illegally obtained software.
