Developing technologies and more widespread computer use are opening the way surveys are being conducted because software now enables an individual to post surveys on a webpage or on your corporate intranet for completion, explains Megan Cole in the updated "Surveys From Start to Finish" TD at Work. Online surveys have distinct advantages, for example, allowing for quick turnaround of data. After you purchase the software, the costs of an online survey also are generally minimal.

However, there are specific considerations to using an email or online survey. These include:

  • Is the intended population computer literate enough to complete the questionnaire?

  • Which segments of the population will you miss if you use such a survey?

  • Will certain segments of the population be taken aback or scared off by this methodology?

Initial questions to ask yourself around electronic questionnaires include:

  • How much money can I invest in software?

  • Do I have the time and interest necessary to learn new software?

  • Alternatively, does the organization have the expertise to help me?

  • If sending emails, do I have the email addresses I need for the sample?

If using software for the first time, Cole suggests checking out a few products to determine what's best for your needs.

These tips were adapted from “Surveys From Start to Finish,” the June 2016 issue of TD at Work.
