With funding from Appalachian Regional Initiative for Stronger Economies (ARISE), the Appalachian Regional Commission awarded the University of Kentucky's Kentucky Research Institute (KWRI) nearly $430,000 for its new Appalachian Water Infrastructure Workforce Development and Training Center.
ARISE drives large-scale economic transformation through multistate collaboration. In this case, the university will work with West Virginia University, the Kentucky Rural Water Association, and the West Virginia Rural Association to conduct research on water workforce needs in central Appalachia and develop an implementation plan for the training center.
"A well-trained workforce to operate our water infrastructure is necessary for economic development in central Appalachia and is critical for the health and well-being of its residents," says KWRI Director Jason Unrine in a press release.
The funding will also address recruitment and retention issues. KWRI's previous research revealed a shortage in certified water operators in both Kentucky and West Virginia. Between 2019 and 2023, there was a 31 percent decrease in certified operators.
