The article discusses the uses and benefits of instant messaging (IM) in the workplace. Based on the survey conducted by Osterman Research, about 90 percent of corporations already installed IM on their networks and some experts anticipate IM will eventually surpass the email technology. However, the application of IM brings challenges especially during its introduction pace in the business. In the work place of learning and performance professionals, it is an opportunity to increase their entire range of skills or aptitudes on learning and performance tools. IM can be use for real-time learning during orientation and training programs. It can also be a perfect solution to promote self-service with a little support. Some obstacles of IM in the work environment are presented.
