When a large group of seasoned marketing managers was asked a multiple-choice question about their ability to mentor others, most respondents indicated they were highly competent. Then, I wondered, how many hands would go up if asked, "Who is prepared to deliver on mentoring that creates measurable, career-catapulting development results?" After all, companies that have made significant investments in their mentoring programs, such as SAP and PwC, are looking for mentoring outcomes that both significantly advance the mentees and deliver against strategic talent management objectives. Aspiring to this level of mentoring means a significant shift in approach for many mentors.
