Congratulations on your new leadership role. Before ordering business cards and conducting your first team meeting, make note of the challenges women leaders often face during their first year on the job.

1. Avoiding perception barriers.

Some people will not yet see you as a leader. If you're an underrepresented minority, you likely will experience significantly more pushback. Double down on referencing your experience and track record when you speak.

2. Embodying roles.

Don't feel like you need to earn the leadership role even after you've started the position. The organization chose you because it trusts you to do the job.

3. Embracing challenges.

You will want to say yes to every opportunity in your new role, but be vigilant about how full your plate becomes in the first 12 months.

4. Getting glass cliff assignments.

Were you the last-chance candidate for the position because they couldn't find anyone else? Beware of such glass-cliff assignments that employers give to women or underrepresented minorities as a last resort. Look out for the pitfalls and opportunities they can lead to.

5. Losing sight of your vision.

The company hired you because you have a vision for the organization. Keep that in mind during the busyness of your first year of leadership. Continue to fuel your vision for the future.
