The article presents results of a survey conducted by the Ken Blanchard Cos. of San Diego related to corporate issues. Survey results showed that concerns about skills shortages are more acute today as 43 percent of all respondents cited the skills shortage among the top three business challenges of 2006. The shortage of skills was the only category that increased annually over the past three years. Scott Blanchard, vice president for client solutions at the Ken Blanchard Cos. said that training is an important factor in closing the skills gap and closing skills gap includes closing another gap, i.e. between learning and doing. An organization should identify major skills required to maintain a competitive edge to meet the advancing need. The next step is to make an honest evaluation of leaders of the organization to know their core competencies. Some of the essential management skills identified by Blanchard are strong communication, ability to work with a team and setting individual goals that complement the organization's objectives.
