The article discusses the problem of expected labor shortage in future due to the retirement of baby boomers in the U.S. While the media is focusing on the impact of executive exits, retirement of frontline leaders will have a measurable effect on an organization's ability to compete, perform, and grow. Companies that are able to identify and develop new supervisors and frontline leaders quickly are expected to achieve a competitive advantage in the coming time. Many organizations are looking for new methods for the faster development of new employees, especially new leaders, to shorten the productivity curve. They are turning to carefully planned onboarding programs which are specifically designed to give new leaders the skills and the support they need to achieve. The most significant challenges being faced by new leaders include shifting from getting things done to getting things done through others, dealing with complex, demanding, and often conflicting, expectations, and establishing credibility and relationships with subordinates, superiors, and peers.
